Best Christmas Markets in Europe 2026: Dates and How to Plan a Trip Around Them

The short answer: Most of Europe's big Christmas markets open between mid and late November 2026 and run until December 23 or 24; a few stay open into the new year. Vienna's Rathausplatz market, Tivoli in Copenhagen and Budapest's Advent Bazilika all open on November 13, 2026. Nuremberg and Strasbourg open later, on November 27. If you want the most markets open at once, plan your trip between Friday, November 27 and Wednesday, December 23, 2026, and go on weekdays.
Below are the 2026 dates we could confirm on each market's official site (or the city's own site), as of October 9, 2026, and the routes that make sense for one trip.
When do the Christmas markets in Europe open in 2026?
From November 13, with most of the classics open by the last weekend of November. Here's the 2026 calendar.

| Salzburger Christkindlmarkt | Salzburg, Austria | Nov 19, 2026 to Jan 1, 2027 | Mon to Thu 10am to 8:30pm; Fri to 9pm; Sat 9am to 9pm |

| Marché de Noël de Strasbourg | Strasbourg, France | Opens Fri, Nov 27, 2026 | Not announced yet |
Two notes. Strasbourg has confirmed its opening day but not its closing day or hours for 2026, so check the official site before you go. And in Cologne, the dates are per the city's tourism portal, koeln.de; local press reported that the contract to run the cathedral market in 2026 was being re-tendered, so check again closer to your trip.
Prague's Old Town Square market is a classic, but we couldn't find 2026 dates on an official city or Prague City Tourism page yet, so it's not in the table.
Which Christmas market should I pick?
It depends on what you want from the trip. Nothing here is the right market for everyone.
- If you love grand architecture and a big-city break: Vienna. The market sits in front of the neo-Gothic City Hall, and the Eistraum ice rink next to it runs from November 13, 2026 to January 6, 2027.
- If you want the oldest and most traditional feel: Dresden's Striezelmarkt is in its 592nd edition in 2026, on the Altmarkt. Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt is the one people picture when they think "German Christmas market", and it opens on November 27 with the Christkind's prologue (the market pauses from 5:30pm to 6pm that evening for the ceremony).
- If you love a fairy-tale old town: Salzburg, on Domplatz and Residenzplatz in the Altstadt. It also stays open until January 1, 2027, which makes it one of the few options for a trip between Christmas and New Year.
- If you'd rather combine the market with Paris: Strasbourg, which calls itself the "Capitale de Noël". The main sites are Place Broglie and the area around the cathedral.
- If you're traveling with people who aren't into crafts and mulled wine: Copenhagen's Tivoli, an amusement park dressed for Christmas, with rides and restaurants. Entry is ticketed.
- If you want to stay through New Year's Eve: Budapest's Advent Bazilika runs until January 1, 2027, with late hours on December 31.
How do I plan a trip around Europe's Christmas markets?
Pick one base city and add one easy train ride, instead of trying to see six markets in a week. These pairings work because the trains are fast and frequent.
| Route | Train time (approx.) | Best window in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Vienna + Salzburg | About 2 hours 25 minutes on the fastest ÖBB Railjet | Nov 19 to Dec 23 |
| Nuremberg + Munich | About 1 hour on the ICE | Nov 27 to Dec 23 |
| Paris + Strasbourg | About 1 hour 46 minutes on the TGV from Gare de l'Est | From Nov 27 (closing date not announced) |
| Vienna + Budapest | Direct trains run between the two capitals; check ÖBB or MÁV for times | Nov 13 to Dec 23 |
A simple plan for a long weekend with friends:
- Choose your base city first, then check the market's official dates for your exact days.
- Book the hotel early; old town hotels in Nuremberg, Salzburg and Strasbourg are small and fill up in Advent.
- Arrive on a Thursday, do the main market on Friday during the day, and save the weekend evening for the lights.
- Book the day-trip train in advance for the best fares.
- Keep a buffer day: Christmas Eve and Christmas Day hours are shorter, and some markets close on specific days (Cologne on November 22, per the city's tourism portal).
When is the best time to visit the Christmas markets?
On a weekday, in the late afternoon. You see the stalls in daylight and the lights come on after dark, before the evening crowd. In late November and December, it gets dark early in Central Europe, so the "lights" part of the visit starts early too.
Weekends in December are the busiest. If you can only go on a weekend, the first one after the markets open is usually calmer than the ones closer to Christmas. Avoid planning around December 24: Nuremberg, Dresden and most German markets close that afternoon, and Vienna closes at 6:30pm.
What should I pack and budget for?
Mostly warm layers, and some cash.
| Topic | What to know |
|---|---|
| Weather | Expect cold evenings, often near freezing in Austria and Germany; wear boots and bring gloves |
| Cups | Many markets serve mulled wine in a mug with a deposit; return it for the deposit back, or keep it as a souvenir |
| Payment | More stalls take cards now, but carry some cash for small purchases |
| Currency | Euro in Austria, Germany and France; Danish krone in Copenhagen; Hungarian forint in Budapest |
| Crowds | Keep your phone and wallet in front pockets in busy evening crowds |
| Kids | Nuremberg has a separate children's Christmas market; Tivoli has rides |
