Dyker Heights Christmas Lights 2026: Dates, Getting There, Tips

The short answer: there's no official start date, because the Dyker Heights Christmas lights are private homes, not an organized event. Most houses decorate around Thanksgiving weekend (Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026) and keep the lights up into the first week of January. The fullest stretch is usually mid December through New Year's Eve, from dusk to about 9pm. The best blocks are 83rd to 86th Streets between 11th and 13th Avenues in southwest Brooklyn. Take the D train to 79 St or the R train to 86 St, then walk 15 to 20 minutes. Walking the streets is free.

Because no one organizes this, everything below is the usual pattern from recent years, not a 2026 schedule. Each family decides when to switch on.

When do the Dyker Heights Christmas lights go up in 2026?

Short answer: expect the first houses to light up the weekend after Thanksgiving (November 27 to 29, 2026) and nearly all of them by mid December.

There's no organizer, city permit or announced opening night. The displays are put up by homeowners, many of them using professional decorating companies, and each house runs on its own timing. Here is the pattern that local guides describe:

Time Out and amNY both say the displays go up right after Thanksgiving and run into early January. Free Tours by Foot notes that most homes have their lights on by mid December and that many are gone by New Year's Day, so don't leave it until January if you want the full effect.

What are the best nights and times to see the lights?

Short answer: a weeknight between about December 10 and 23, arriving right after dark, around 5pm.

  • Time of day. Lights come on at dusk, around 4:30 to 5pm in December. Time Out recommends visiting between dusk and 9pm, because many houses switch off after 9pm (a few stay on later). Free Tours by Foot says most are off by 10pm.
  • Day of the week. Monday to Thursday is noticeably calmer. Friday and Saturday nights in December bring tour buses, traffic and packed sidewalks.
  • Weeks to avoid if you hate crowds. The days just before Christmas and the week between Christmas and New Year's are the busiest. If you love a lively, almost block party atmosphere, those are exactly the nights to go.
  • Weather. A clear, cold night is ideal. Rain makes the walk much less fun.

How do I get to Dyker Heights by subway or bus?

Short answer: D train to 79 St, or R train to 86 St, then walk about 15 to 20 minutes. From Midtown, plan on roughly 45 to 55 minutes door to door.

OptionGet off atThen
D train79 St (at New Utrecht Avenue, Bensonhurst)Walk about 15 minutes west, uphill in places, to 13th Avenue and 83rd to 84th Streets
R train86 St (at 4th Avenue, Bay Ridge)Walk about 20 minutes east along 86th Street, or take the B1 bus
B1 busBoards on 86th Street near the R stationRuns east along 86th Street; get off around 11th to 13th Avenue and walk a few blocks north
Car or rideshareAnywhere around 11th to 13th AvenuesExpect heavy traffic and very little parking on December weekends

Which train to pick:

  • Coming from Midtown or Lower Manhattan: the D is often the quicker ride. From 79 St, the walk is short but hilly.
  • Staying in Bay Ridge or along the R line: take the R to 86 St. It puts you near good food on 3rd Avenue (see below), and the B1 bus covers most of the walk.
  • With kids or anyone who'd rather not walk a mile: take the train, then a rideshare or the B1 for the last stretch. Leaving later at night, getting a rideshare is easier than finding a yellow cab.

Don't drive if you can help it. Every guide we checked warns about bumper to bumper traffic and almost no parking on peak nights.

What's the best walking route through Dyker Heights?

Short answer: walk 83rd and 84th Streets between 11th and 13th Avenues, then loop back along 85th and 86th. Allow 60 to 90 minutes.

The densest area is a compact grid of about 3 blocks by 2 avenues, so you can't really get lost. A simple loop:

  1. Start at 13th Avenue and 84th Street if you came from the D train.
  2. Walk west on 84th Street toward 11th Avenue. This is the block with the most famous houses: the Spata house at 1152 84th Street, where Lucy Spata, known locally as the "Queen of Christmas," has decorated since she and her late husband moved in in 1986, according to ABC7. Across the street, the Polizzotto house at 1145 84th Street is the other classic stop, first decorated decades ago.
  3. Turn onto 83rd Street and walk back east. Many of the most elaborate displays sit on 83rd and 84th.
  4. Finish on 85th and 86th Streets, then head to dinner or catch the B1 on 86th Street back toward the R train.

Displays change from year to year, and these are family homes, so a house that was spectacular last year may be simpler this year. If you love wandering rather than ticking off addresses, skip the route and follow whichever block looks brightest.

Be a good guest. Stay on the sidewalk, don't step onto lawns or porches, keep the noise down and take your trash with you. Time Out also points out that public restrooms are hard to find in this residential neighborhood, so plan a stop before you arrive (the restaurants below are your best bet).

How crowded does it get?

Short answer: very, on December weekends. More than 100,000 people visit the neighborhood each season, according to NYC Tourism.

Brooklyn Magazine's 2025 report described tour groups of 30 or more crowding the sidewalks, and some locals now avoid the blocks entirely on weekends. Residents have complained for years about traffic, noise and tour bus parking, according to CBS New York, which is part of why the experience is very different on a Tuesday than on a Saturday.

To make it easier:

  • Go Monday to Thursday, as early as 5pm.
  • Keep bags small and leave the stroller at home on weekends if you can.
  • Pick a meeting point (for example, the corner of 84th Street and 12th Avenue) in case your group gets split up.
  • If anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or stroller, go early on a weeknight, when the sidewalks have the most room.

Are there tours of the Dyker Heights Christmas lights?

Short answer: yes, several companies run bus tours from Manhattan, but you don't need one. Walking on your own is free.

  • A Slice of Brooklyn. The best known. Its Christmas Lights Tour departs from Manhattan, and NYC Tourism describes it as about 3.5 hours including stories from homeowners. The company says tours often sell out and need to be bought in advance. 2026 prices and dates weren't posted when we checked in late October; recent listings ranged from about $50 to $75 per adult.
  • Tour America. Another bus tour with a walking portion, also offered in Spanish, according to Free Tours by Foot.
  • Self-guided audio tours. Free Tours by Foot sells one if you want the stories without a group.

A tour makes sense if you're short on time, don't want to deal with the subway at night, or are traveling with older relatives. If you love setting your own pace, go on your own and spend the money on dinner.

Where should I eat near the Dyker Heights lights?

Short answer: Tasty Pastry on 13th Avenue for hot chocolate a few blocks from the lights, then an Italian hero or a pasta-topped pizza nearby.

There's not much right on the decorated blocks, so plan food before or after. These all come from The Infatuation's December 2025 guide to eating near the lights. Hours change, so check before you go.

  • Tasty Pastry (8218 13th Avenue). The closest stop: hot chocolate, sfogliatelle, cassata and struffoli, right at the edge of the lights. Perfect for warming up mid walk.
  • Krispy Pizza (7112 13th Avenue). Pizza with pasta on top, including a penne vodka pie. Over the top in the best way, which suits the neighborhood.
  • Lioni Italian Heroes (7803 15th Avenue, Bensonhurst). Big Italian heroes (The Infatuation suggests the #25), near the D train. Grab one on the way in.
  • Brooklyn Roots Italian (8620 3rd Avenue, Bay Ridge). Red sauce comfort food near the R train, good for a sit-down dinner after the walk.
  • Meze (6601 13th Avenue). Greek dips and grilled dishes, a good choice for a group.
  • East Harbor Seafood Palace (714 65th Street, Sunset Park). A bit of a trip, but worth it for dim sum if you're heading there before dark.

Some houses also have driveway tents selling hot chocolate on busy nights, according to Brooklyn Magazine, so bring a little cash.

Can I combine Dyker Heights with other holiday sights?

Yes, on a different part of the same day. Dyker Heights only works after dark, so spend the afternoon in Manhattan and head to Brooklyn around 4pm. See our guides to the NYC holiday markets in 2026 and the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree for the Midtown part of the day.

If you're planning a full December trip with friends, a shared list helps: put the lights, a dinner spot and the market you want into one plan so the group isn't scrolling the chat on a cold street corner. Otta is one free way to do that.
