Christmas in Italy 2026: Best Cities, Markets and Traditions

The short answer: it depends on the Christmas you want. For classic Alpine Christmas markets, go to Bolzano or Merano in South Tyrol, where the 2026 markets open on Thursday, November 26 and run to January 6, 2027. For nativity scenes and a loud, joyful city Christmas, go to Naples and walk Via San Gregorio Armeno. For church and ceremony, Rome. For a short trip around the December 8 holiday, Florence or Milan. Northern Italy has the markets; the south has the food and the nativity scenes.

Some 2026 dates were still unconfirmed in late October 2026, so we mark what's official, what's reported and what's last year's pattern.

Short answer: the northern markets open between November 20 and 26, 2026, and most run until January 6, 2027. City markets farther south are shorter or less predictable.

Is Bolzano or Merano better for Christmas markets?

Short answer: Bolzano for the bigger, busier market; Merano if you want a prettier, more relaxed one. They're close enough to do both: regional trains between them take roughly 35 to 45 minutes.

  • Bolzano. The market centers on Waltherplatz, around a big lit tree, and spreads into the old town streets, with a craft market on Via Isarco (Eisackstraße). A separate solidarity market runs in Piazza del Grano (Kornplatz) from November 26 to December 23, 2026. Go on a weekday if crowds bother you.
  • Merano. The stalls sit in the pedestrian center near the Prince's Castle (Landesfürstliche Burg). It's a spa town, so the pace is slower. The official listing says it's closed on December 25, though its daily calendar shows hours that day, so call the tourist office (+39 0473 272000) if you plan to go on Christmas Day.
  • Trento. South of Bolzano on the same rail line, Trento suits travelers who want a calmer city with its own market.

South Tyrol is bilingual (German and Italian), and the food leans Tyrolean.

Why go to Naples at Christmas?

Short answer: for the nativity scenes. Naples treats the presepe (nativity scene) as an art form, and the city at Christmas is one of the most alive places in Italy.

  • Via San Gregorio Armeno. A narrow lane in the historic center lined with workshops making nativity figures. The shops are open all year, but December is when the street is at its fullest. Look for figures of politicians and actors next to the shepherds. Go on a weekday morning, before local shoppers fill it.
  • Monastero di San Gregorio Armeno. On the same street, with a cloister and frescoes by Luca Giordano: a quiet break from the crowd.
  • Certosa e Museo di San Martino. Up on the Vomero hill, the museum has a whole section on the Neapolitan presepe, including the Presepe Cuciniello, an 18th century figure collection set in an artificial grotto with lighting that cycles from dawn to night. If you love craft and detail, this is the one to see.

Naples is about 1 hour 10 minutes from Rome on the fastest Frecciarossa trains, so you can pair the two.

What is Rome like at Christmas?

Short answer: fewer markets, more ceremony. Rome is for travelers who care about the religious side of Christmas, or who want the city's big monuments with a festive layer.

  • December 8 at Piazza di Spagna. On the feast of the Immaculate Conception, Rome's firefighters climb to lay a wreath on the statue of the Virgin Mary atop the column in Piazza Mignanelli, a tradition since 1949. In the afternoon, the Pope traditionally comes to pray at the column. In 2025, Pope Leo XIV left the Vatican at 3:30pm for the ceremony. Expect a crowd and arrive early.
  • St. Peter's Square. The Vatican's Christmas tree and nativity scene are unveiled in December; in 2025 the ceremony was on December 15 at 5pm. The 2026 date wasn't announced when we checked.
  • Papal Christmas Eve Mass. Tickets are free and requested through the Prefecture of the Papal Household, and they go fast. Request well before December. Without a ticket, you can follow it on the big screens in St. Peter's Square.
  • Piazza Navona. The square hosts Rome's Christmas market, which traditionally culminates on January 6 with the arrival of the Befana. The 2026 to 2027 dates weren't published as of October 2026.

Is Florence or Milan worth it at Christmas?

Short answer: yes, for a long weekend around December 7 and 8, when both cities have their own reasons to celebrate.

  • Florence. The festive season traditionally starts on December 8, when the giant tree in Piazza del Duomo is lit, and a life-size nativity scene stands beside the cathedral until January 6. The German-style Weihnachtsmarkt in Piazza Santa Croce ran from November 15 to December 21 in 2025, per listings; 2026 dates weren't confirmed.
  • Milan. December 7 is the feast of Sant'Ambrogio, Milan's patron saint, and a local holiday. The Oh Bej Oh Bej fair sets up around Castello Sforzesco for about four days (December 5 to 8 in 2025), with roasted chestnuts, sweets, toys, prints and metalwork. The same evening, La Scala traditionally opens its opera season.
  • Verona. An easy add-on from either city. Its Christmas market includes a Christkindlmarkt in Piazza dei Signori organized with Nuremberg. In 2025 it ran November 21 to December 28; 2026 dates weren't announced when we checked.

What Italian Christmas traditions should I know before I go?

Short answer: Christmas in Italy runs from December 8 to January 6, and the big meal is often on Christmas Eve, not Christmas Day.

  • December 8, Immaculate Conception (Immacolata). A national holiday and the unofficial start of the season. Traditionally, it's when trees and nativity scenes go up. In 2026 it falls on a Tuesday, so many Italians take Monday off for a four-day weekend. Expect busy trains and booked hotels.
  • December 24, the Vigilia. Traditionally a meatless dinner, which in practice means fish, and often a big one (the cenone), especially in central and southern Italy. In Naples that can mean spaghetti with colatura di alici or fried capitone (eel); in Rome, fried baccalà. The "Feast of the Seven Fishes" is the Italian-American name for this meal; in Italy you'll just hear "la Vigilia".
  • December 25 and 26. Christmas Day is for family lunch at home. December 26, Santo Stefano, is also a national holiday.
  • January 6, Epiphany and La Befana. A national holiday. The Befana, an old woman on a broomstick, fills children's stockings with sweets on the night of January 5, and a lump of "coal" (usually black sugar candy) for the naughty ones. Rome's Piazza Navona is the classic place to see her.

What's closed in Italy on December 25 and 26?

Short answer: a lot on December 25, a fair amount on December 26. In 2026, Christmas is a Friday and Santo Stefano a Saturday, so plan for a quiet long weekend.

  • Colosseum: closed on December 25, 2026 and January 1, 2027, per its official site.
  • Uffizi: closed on December 25, January 1 and Mondays, per its official site.
  • Vatican Museums: have closed on both December 25 and 26 in past years. Check the official 2026 calendar before you book.
  • Christmas markets: Bolzano is closed on December 25, and most markets shorten their hours on December 24 and 31.
  • Shops and restaurants: most shops close on December 25 and many on December 26. Book Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals well ahead, because the restaurants that open often serve a set menu.
  • Transport: trains and city transport run, but often on a reduced holiday schedule. Check Trenitalia or the local operator for the day.

How should I plan a Christmas trip to Italy?

Short answer: pick one region instead of trying to see all of Italy.

  • For markets: Bolzano plus Merano, with an optional day in Trento. Best window: November 26 to December 23, 2026.
  • For a city Christmas: Rome plus Naples, ideally including December 8 or the days just before Christmas.
  • For a long weekend: Milan or Florence from December 5 to 8, 2026, with Verona as a side trip.
