New Year's Eve in Rio 2026: Copacabana Fireworks, Metro and Tips

The short answer: New Year's Eve in Rio, called Réveillon, is a free party on the beach. The main event is on Copacabana, where millions of people dressed in white watch fireworks fired from barges just offshore at midnight, with concerts on big stages before and after. December 31, 2026 falls on a Thursday. As of late October 2026, the city hadn't announced the 2026 lineup, stages or transport plan, so this guide uses last year's setup as the pattern: in 2025, Copacabana had 12 minutes of fireworks from 19 barges, three stages, a special metro pass sold in advance, and the whole neighborhood closed to cars from 9pm.

What happens on New Year's Eve in Rio?

Short answer: a free, all-night beach party organized by the city's tourism office, Riotur, with Copacabana as the main stage and smaller parties across the city.

For the night of December 31, 2025, the city set up 13 stages with free concerts: three in Copacabana and Leme, and ten more in other neighborhoods, from Flamengo to Paquetá island. The Prefeitura (city government) counted more than 5.1 million people across all of them, about 2.6 million on Copacabana alone. Guinness World Records later recognized it as the largest New Year's Eve party in the world.

The night usually runs like this:

  • 6pm: music starts and people stake out a patch of sand.
  • Before midnight: the headline acts play. In 2025, the main stage had Gilberto Gil with Ney Matogrosso and Belo with Alcione before the countdown.
  • Midnight: the fireworks start and everyone heads to the water.
  • After midnight: the concerts restart and run until dawn. In 2025 the main stage closed at 3:30am with the Beija-Flor samba school.

If you're also thinking about coming back in February, our Rio Carnival 2027 guide covers the parades and street parties.

Where are the best spots to watch the Copacabana fireworks?

Short answer: anywhere on Copacabana or Leme beach, because the barges are spread along the whole shoreline. Pick your spot by the music you want around you.

In 2025, the city lined up 19 barges along Copacabana, almost double the number used in 2024, for a 12 minute show synced to music and 1,200 drones. Since the barges cover the full length of the beach, you don't need to be in front of the main stage to see the show well.

  • In front of the Copacabana Palace (Palco Rio). This is the main stage and the densest crowd. Go here if you want the big headliners and the full spectacle, and arrive by early evening.
  • Near Rua República do Peru (the samba stage). In 2025, the Palco Samba Amstel had Roberta Sá, Mart'nália and Diogo Nogueira. Go here if you love samba and want a slightly more local feel.
  • Leme. The short stretch at the north end of the beach had a gospel music stage in 2025. It's still on the fireworks shoreline, and it tends to suit families or anyone who wants a bit more room.
  • The edges of the crowd. The farther you are from the stages, the easier it is to reach the water at midnight and to leave afterward.

These were the 2025 stages; check Riotur in December for the 2026 layout.

Where else in Rio can you see fireworks on New Year's Eve?

Short answer: in 2025, the city also held fireworks in Flamengo, at the Igreja da Penha, in Parque Oeste and in Parque Realengo, while Barra da Tijuca had shows from hotel and mall rooftops.

Spot2025 fireworksGood for
Praia do Flamengo3 barges, 10 minutes, plus a concert stageA smaller beach party with Sugarloaf Mountain across the water
Igreja da Penha8 minutes, plus a stage nearbySeeing a local, North Zone Réveillon
Barra da Tijuca and Recreio12 rooftop fireworks pointsStaying in a Barra hotel and celebrating at its party
Ipanema and ArpoadorNo official show listed in 2025A quieter night, but not the fireworks
  • Flamengo. The stage sat near Rua Dois de Dezembro in 2025, with Joanna, Samba do Trabalhador and a Raul Seixas tribute. It's a calmer beach than Copacabana and a short metro ride from the center.
  • Barra da Tijuca. Barra doesn't have a beach show like Copacabana. Instead, the hotel sector, with Riotur's support, fired fireworks from 12 rooftops in Barra and Recreio, and many hotels hold indoor parties in their ballrooms. Good if you want a hotel party rather than the crowd.

Can you watch the fireworks from a boat?

Short answer: yes, and it's one of the most memorable ways to see them, but book only with an operator whose boat is inspected by the Brazilian Navy.

For the 2025 Réveillon, the Navy's Capitania dos Portos expected 200 to 300 recreational and passenger boats off Copacabana. Every boat had to pass a safety inspection (pre-inspections until December 30, a final one on December 31), and approved boats got a pass while their drivers wore a "zero alcohol" wristband. The water near the fireworks barges was closed from 6pm on December 31 to 2am on January 1 to any boat without that pass. The Navy also warned it could restrict or ban navigation in bad weather.

So ask the operator to confirm the Capitania inspection and what happens if weather cancels the trip.

What are the New Year's traditions in Rio?

Short answer: wear white, jump seven waves at midnight, and toss white flowers into the sea for Iemanjá, the Afro-Brazilian goddess of the sea.

  • Wear white. Most people do, from head to toe. It traces back to Afro-Brazilian religious gatherings on Copacabana: Brasil de Fato credits Umbanda leader Tata Tancredo with encouraging the first beach ceremonies in the early 1950s, when people went to the sand dressed in white.
  • Jump seven waves. At midnight, people walk into the surf and jump over seven small waves, making a wish with each one. It comes from the same Umbanda roots.
  • Offerings to Iemanjá. Flowers, candles and small boats carrying gifts are sent out to sea. These days the main ceremony happens before New Year's: the Festa de Iemanjá from the Mercadão de Madureira market has been held on December 29 since 2002, with devotees gathering near Posto 4 on Copacabana. In 2026, December 29 is a Tuesday. If you go, watch respectfully: it's a religious ceremony, not a show. The fireworks came later, in 1978, when a restaurant owner got Leme merchants to pay for a display.

How does the metro work on New Year's Eve in Rio?

Short answer: from 7pm on December 31, regular cards stop working and you need a special Réveillon pass bought in advance on the MetrôRio app or website. That was the 2025 rule; check MetrôRio in December for 2026.

  • The pass. A round trip pass cost R$15 and was sold only on the MetrôRio app or website, up to 10 per purchase. You picked an outbound time slot (7pm, 8pm, 9pm, 10pm or 11pm). In 2025, about 140,000 passes sold out around 1pm on December 31, so buy early.
  • No regular cards. From 7pm on December 31 until 7am on January 1, transit cards and tap to pay weren't accepted.
  • The return wristband. You got a wristband when you entered on the way there, and needed it to ride back between midnight and 5am.
  • Stations for the ride home. After midnight, only Cardeal Arcoverde, Siqueira Campos and Cantagalo (all Copacabana), General Osório (Ipanema) and Jardim Oceânico (Barra) were open for boarding. Every other station was exit only.
  • No big bags. Bags over 25 liters, bottles, fireworks, surfboards and bikes weren't allowed on the metro.

Buses and cars. In 2025, Avenida Atlântica, the beachfront road, closed completely from 7am on December 31. From 7pm, only regular buses and taxis could enter Copacabana, and from 9pm the neighborhood closed to all vehicles. After 9pm, buses ran only from the Terminal Enseada de Botafogo. Plan to walk the last stretch.

How do you stay safe on Copacabana on New Year's Eve?

Short answer: pack light, leave glass and valuables at home, agree on a meeting point, and expect a security check on the way to the sand.

For the 2025 Réveillon, police set up 17 screening points with metal detectors and facial recognition cameras on the streets leading to the beach in Copacabana and Leme, with about 3,500 officers on duty. Glass bottles and private fireworks weren't allowed, and street vendors were banned from selling drinks in glass. The city also set up medical posts near Praça do Lido, Rua República do Peru and Rua Siqueira Campos.

  • Carry the minimum. A phone, a card, a little cash and your metro pass, in a front pocket or a small cross body bag.
  • Pick a meeting point. Phone signal can be weak in a crowd that size. Agree on a lifeguard post (they're numbered) and a time, in case your group splits up.
  • Drink water. It's summer, and you may be on the sand for hours.
  • Be careful in the sea. Jump your waves at the edge, especially after a few drinks and in the dark.

When should you book a place to stay for New Year's in Rio?

Short answer: as early as you can. Rio's hotels are close to full every Réveillon, and Copacabana fills first.

According to the hotel association HotéisRIO, average hotel occupancy over the 2025 Réveillon was 90.58% citywide and 95.59% in Copacabana and Leme. Ipanema and Leblon reached 92.71%, Barra and São Conrado 89.67%, and Flamengo and Botafogo 88.02%.

  • Copacabana or Leme to walk to the fireworks and back.
  • Ipanema if you want a nicer neighborhood the rest of the trip and are happy to walk or ride one metro stop.
  • Flamengo or Botafogo for better prices, with the Flamengo fireworks nearby.
  • Barra if you'd rather celebrate at a hotel party than on the public beach.

Many beachfront hotels also sell their own New Year's Eve parties. For example, the Pestana Rio Atlântica in Copacabana announced a rooftop party for December 31, 2026, from 9pm to 2am, with the Beija-Flor drummers and DJs, sold on Sympla and at the hotel. Check whether a party ticket is included in your stay or sold separately, and whether the hotel requires a minimum number of nights over New Year's.

If you're going with friends, a shared list of where you're staying, your meeting point on the beach and the places you want to eat on January 1 saves a lot of group chat back and forth. Otta is one way to keep that in one place.

Where should you eat around New Year's in Rio?

Short answer: book New Year's Eve dinner well ahead, ask whether the restaurant is serving a special set menu that night, and plan a slow lunch for January 1, when the city wakes up late.

For restaurant ideas from a local, the Rio food creator @cariocaeating has a public Otta guide that covers neighborhoods from Copacabana and Ipanema to Botafogo and Barra.
