Prague and Budapest Christmas Markets 2026: Dates and a Two-City Plan

The short answer: Prague's two big markets, on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, run from November 28, 2026 to January 6, 2027, daily from 10am to 10pm, according to the organizer. Budapest's Advent Bazilika at St. Stephen's Basilica runs from November 13, 2026 to January 1, 2027, per its official site, and the Vörösmarty Square fair is listed for November 13 to December 31, 2026 (not yet confirmed by the organizer when we checked). Yes, you can do both in one trip: direct trains link the two cities in about 7 hours, so plan five to seven days, with the sweet spot between November 28 and December 23, when every market is open with full hours.
This guide goes deep on just these two cities. For the wider list (Vienna, Salzburg, Nuremberg, Strasbourg and more), see our guide to Europe's Christmas markets in 2026.
When are the Prague Christmas markets in 2026?
Short answer: November 28, 2026 to January 6, 2027 on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, 10am to 10pm.
The organizer, Taiko, lists both squares with the same dates and hours on trhypraha.cz, and Prague City Tourism (prague.eu) shows the same dates. The opening falls on the Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent, which matches last year's pattern (November 29, 2025 to January 6, 2026).
| Market | Where | 2026 dates | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) | Prague 1 | Nov 28, 2026 to Jan 6, 2027, 10am to 10pm | Confirmed by the organizer |
| Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí), lower part | Prague 1 | Nov 28, 2026 to Jan 6, 2027, 10am to 10pm | Confirmed by the organizer |
| Náměstí Míru (Peace Square) | Vinohrady, Prague 2 | Not announced | Opened first in 2025, on November 20 |
| Prague Castle Christmas stroll | Castle courtyards | Not announced | In 2025 it was closed on December 24 |
- If you want the postcard moment: Old Town Square, with the Týn Church behind the tree and the astronomical clock on the corner. In 2025, the 26 meter tree was lit on opening day, November 29, in the late afternoon. Expect the 2026 lighting around opening day too, but the time wasn't published when we checked.
- If you'd rather eat than browse: Wenceslas Square, the easier, more food-focused stop.
- If you want a neighborhood feel: Náměstí Míru in Vinohrady is smaller, more local, and in 2025 its mulled wine was about 20 korunas cheaper than on Old Town Square, according to Seznam Zprávy.
Go to Old Town Square on a weekday around 3pm: you see the stalls in daylight, and the lights come on around 4:30pm, before the evening crowd peaks.
When are the Budapest Christmas markets in 2026?
Short answer: Advent Bazilika runs November 13, 2026 to January 1, 2027; the Vörösmarty Square fair is listed for November 13 to December 31, 2026.
| Market | Where | 2026 dates | Hours | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Advent Bazilika | Szent István tér, in front of St. Stephen's Basilica | Nov 13, 2026 to Jan 1, 2027 | 11am to 10pm; Fri and Sat to 11pm | Official site |
| Vörösmarty Square Christmas Fair | Vörösmarty tér, District V | Nov 13 to Dec 31, 2026, per a local guide | In 2025: Sun to Thu 11am to 9pm, Fri and Sat to 10pm | Not confirmed by the organizer when we checked; it ran November 14 to December 31, 2025 |
| Óbuda Christmas market | Fő tér, Óbuda | Nov 27 to Dec 23, 2026, per a local guide | Check closer to the date | Smaller and local |
- Advent Bazilika is the one people come for. A light show is projected onto the basilica's facade every evening from 5:30pm, and the organizers say it has been voted Europe's most beautiful Christmas market several times. Food and drink stalls work with a rechargeable HelloPay card that you can top up with cash; craft stalls take cash directly.
- Vörösmarty Square is the older, craft-heavy fair, with around 100 stalls of Hungarian ceramics, leather and ornaments. In 2025, vendors took cards only, no cash.
The two big Budapest markets are linked by Deák Ferenc utca (Fashion Street), so you can walk from one to the other in a few minutes and do both in one evening. Start at Vörösmarty in the late afternoon, then walk to the basilica in time for the light show.
What should I eat and drink at the markets?
Short answer: in Prague, sausages, mulled wine and Christmas carp; in Budapest, lángos, chimney cake and stuffed cabbage.
In Prague:
- Svařák (mulled wine) and klobása (grilled sausage) are the market staples. In 2025, Old Town Square charged about 100 CZK for a svařák and 160 CZK for a sausage, per Seznam Zprávy.
- Trdelník is the rolled pastry you'll see everywhere, sold for 100 to 180 CZK in 2025. Eat it if it looks good, but know it isn't an old Czech tradition: Radio Prague and others have covered how it became a tourist favorite in recent decades. Its Hungarian cousin, kürtőskalács, is waiting in Budapest.
- Fried carp with potato salad is the real Czech Christmas Eve dinner. In the days before December 24, you'll see stands selling live carp from big tanks on Prague streets.
- For a sit-down Czech meal: Lokál Dlouhááá (Dlouhá 33, a few minutes' walk from Old Town Square) pours tank beer along a counter nearly 70 meters long and serves Czech pub classics all day. Book ahead, because it fills up.
In Budapest:
- Lángos, fried dough with garlic, sour cream and cheese, cost from 2,000 HUF at Vörösmarty Square in 2025, and about 3,200 HUF fully loaded.
- Kürtőskalács (chimney cake) started at 2,800 HUF, and forralt bor (mulled wine) was 1,800 HUF for 2 dl in 2025, per Budapest by Locals.
- Töltött káposzta (stuffed cabbage) is the hearty Christmas dish, from about 7,000 HUF a portion at the fair.
- Bejgli, a rolled pastry filled with poppy seed or walnut, is the Hungarian Christmas cake. Bakeries stack it high in December, and it travels well if you want an edible souvenir.
- For a warm break: Café Gerbeaud has been on Vörösmarty Square since 1870, so it sits right beside the fair.
Prices for 2026 hadn't been published when we checked, so treat these as last year's guide.
Can you do Prague and Budapest in one trip?
Short answer: yes. Direct trains run about every two hours and take about 6 hours 50 minutes.
According to Seat61's timetable, direct railjet and EuroCity trains leave Praha hlavní nádraží through the day (for example 5:36am, 9:36am and 1:36pm) and arrive at Budapest Nyugati about 6 hours 50 minutes later, via Bratislava. They're run jointly by the Czech, Slovak and Hungarian railways. RegioJet also runs the route, via Vienna, a little slower.
| Option | Time | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Day train (railjet / EuroCity) | About 6 hours 50 minutes, direct | Seeing the countryside, working on the train |
| RegioJet | A bit longer, via Vienna | Low fares |
| Metropol night train | Leaves Prague 9:58pm, arrives Budapest Nyugati 8:29am | Saving a hotel night and a daytime |
- Book direct. Seat61 says the cheapest advance fares are on the Czech Railways site (cd.cz) or the Hungarian railways site, from about €21 in second class. RegioJet sells its own tickets on regiojet.com.
- Take the night train if you can. You go to sleep after an evening at Old Town Square and wake up in Budapest with a full market day ahead.
- Want a third stop? The day trains pass through Bratislava, so you can break the journey there for an afternoon if you like.
How many days do I need for Prague and Budapest at Christmas?
Short answer: five to seven days. Two or three in each city, plus the travel day.
A five-day plan that works:
- Day 1, Prague: arrive, Old Town Square in the late afternoon, dinner at Lokál.
- Day 2, Prague: Charles Bridge in the morning before the crowds, Prague Castle, then Wenceslas Square and Náměstí Míru in the evening.
- Day 3, travel: morning train to Budapest, or the night train on the evening of Day 2.
- Day 4, Budapest: a thermal bath in the morning, Vörösmarty Square in the afternoon, Advent Bazilika for the 5:30pm light show.
- Day 5, Budapest: the Great Market Hall for paprika and bejgli, then a last walk along the Danube.
Both cities' markets are open from November 28, so the order is up to you; Budapest second lets you end in a thermal bath. If you're planning this with friends, keeping the market picks, train times and dinner reservations in one shared trip saves the group chat a lot of scrolling; that's the kind of thing Otta is built for.
Best window: November 28 to December 23, 2026. Weekdays are noticeably calmer than weekends in both cities.
What's the weather like in Prague and Budapest in December?
Short answer: cold, short days, often around freezing.
- Prague: average highs around 2°C (36°F) and lows around -2°C (28°F). It gets dark around 4:30pm. Snow at Christmas is possible but far from guaranteed.
- Budapest: highs about 4 to 6°C (39 to 43°F) early in December, falling to 2 to 4°C (36 to 39°F) by the end of the month, with lows dipping below freezing. You get about 8.5 hours of daylight.
Pack gloves and waterproof boots: you'll stand outside for hours on slick cobblestones.
